Ethernet Fabrics: Technology Spotlight

Abstract

Higher education institutions and their researchers rely on data. The increased volume and variety of data that we are seeing today means that reliable, flexible, scalable networks are needed in contemporary data centers, whether on-premises or in the cloud. Ethernet fabrics address networking issues that have come about as a result of an increase in server virtualization and more complex and diverse applications. Ethernet fabrics help meet bandwidth and flexibility requirements and provide a scalable, low-latency networking approach.

This bulletin is one of a series of papers designed to help institutional leaders learn about and understand the implications of emerging technologies in higher education. These technologies have been identified as the least familiar technologies in the ECAR report Higher Education’s Top 10 Strategic Technologies for 2016. Other papers and related resources are available at the research hub for Higher Education’s Top 10 Strategic Technologies for 2016.
