Beyond Electronic Forms: E-Mail as an Institution-Wide Information Server

At the University of Delaware, faculty, staff, and students - the "secondary users" of administrative systems - had traditionally encountered many roadblocks in their quests for information from administrative databases. Users of "academic" machines had little desire to log on to "administrative" machines and to navigate through applications, menus, and display screens for occasional access to small amounts of narrowly defined information from a diverse collection of institutional data. In response to this challenge, Delaware developed an intelligent mail server to provide easy, inexpensive access to institutional information for users on any node, any machine, or any operating system on the campus-wide network.
