Abstract
The distribution of information services and data management throughout our institutions is a reality. With this reality comes diversity in people who are providers, managers, and users of the institution's information resource. For a quality information resource, all of these individuals must fulfill their data management responsibilities. This requires that their distributed data management role be recognized and further that they have the will, skill, and opportunity to fulfill their role in the processes that originate, integrate, and provide data. This presentation identifies the various data management roles linking central computing, operational systems, and end-users. It relates these roles to an architected environment, describing cross-functional teams required to provide quality information from distributed systems. The suceessful use of these teams are cited in terms of purpose, mission, longevity, and results. Lessons learned from applying team-building concepts to data management and indicators of successful people processes are shared. Recommendations are made for nurturing critical on-going people processes in a distributed environment.Data providers, managers, and users who are concerned about data quality and standards should benefit from this presentation.
