Abstract
The University of Melbourne, a large public university, has embarked on Implementation of an IT Strategic Plan which envisages widespread adoption of IT throughout the academic and administrative functions of the university.Two programs commenced in 1991 and on which the presentation will report are the Staff Development and Training in IT Program and the Interactive Multimedia program. The former has, since its inception, seen about 3000 academic and general staff attend basic IT skills courses for acquisition of familiarity with new workplace applications such as word-processing, document and information retrieval and new administrative systems. A component of this program has been courses specifically targeted to the delivery of IT to executives.The Interactive Multimedia Learning Unit is an academic unit created to work closely with IT, educational, and academic departments to explore and develop applications of IT to teaching and learning. Like most other public institutions, The University of Melbourne is faced with reducing resources and increasing class sizes, and the IMLU will focus on techniques relevant to large group teaching, aids to laboratory programs, and remedial/tutorial assistance.
