Abstract
As information technology advances, universities, colleges, and other information-intensive enterprises periodically discover that their technology support structures no longer meet their institutional needs, In 1988 Indiana University's separate academic and administrative computing units were failing to respond to computer users' changing demands. In merging and reorganizing these units we tackled problems shared by many similar institutions. In the process we learned much that will both encourage and forewarn others whose need for structural change in their technolgy service units is only now becoming clear.
