Abstract
The environment in which today's universities operate is one of rapidly shrinking resources and increased demands for distributing the information technology resources. In such an environment, can central computing services survive? What will be the new roles, if any, for Information Technology personnel?This paper will explore the emergence of user demands for distributed computing and the arrival of CASE technology and relational architectures which can enable this distribution. Arizona State University is undergoing major budget reductions and an 8.1 Richter scale reorganization. The reorganization is intended to address community demands for improved computing support while reducing dependence on large systems. The trick will be to accomplish the support of individual offices while maintaining the coordination required to provide information for executive-level decisions. The survivors will share the results of our early experiences.
