University-Wide Client/Server Applications: A Case Study

Abstract

This presentation will describe and demonstrate a client-server application, developed and implemented at University of Quebec at Montreal (UQAM), for the management of students' records. We shall expose the institutional context in which the development is being accomplished, the problems facing the users of UQAM's Student Information Legacy Systems, and the reasoning behind the choice of a client-server solution by the Registrar's Office. The current status of the development of a universal end-user interface to our Student Information Systems will be presented, as well as its hardware and architecture, and we shall discuss the implications of these developments on the role of the IS organization in our University. We shall then demonstrate the application by connecting a client in San Diego with the UQAM server in Montreal. We will conclude by sharing the main lessons we learned from this experience and which might be of interest to others.
