Abstract
For several years, client/server computing has been described as the best model for complex database systems (and, some would say, as a cure for everything from cancer to the common cold). The utility of that advice is lessened by confusion over what exactly constitutes client/server computing and by the fact that on many of our campuses our principal data resources live in a house built not by us but by a commercial systems vendor. In this panel, senior product-development representatives of three prominent vendors will describe the specific client/server directions their products have taken and are taking. Grey Freeman of the Gartner Group will respond, and a spirited round of audience questions will be encouraged.
