A Methodology for a Successful Transition to Client/Server and Beyond

Abstract

In providing optimal service to customers, information technology departments are faced with many challenges. One of the biggest is making the transition to a distributed applications environment with minimal impact on current structure and plans. With support from key areas, North Carolina State University has taken an innovative approach to moving into the client/server arena using Rapid Applications Development methodology, a dedicated work team, and dedicated contract resources. They were able to build and maintain momentum installing client/server applications while continuing to maintain legacy systems and respond to existing customer requests, keeping pace with emerging technology, and moving forward in developing Web applications. This paper describes a proven, successful path to the understanding and implementation of developing technology and to improving the quality of applications and customer service.
