Implementing "Best-of-Class" Client/Server Systems at a Small College

Abstract

The College is currently implementing several "best-of-class" software systems to address the academic and administrative needs of the campus, taking advantage of a successful campuswide LAN installation by distributing centralized "administrative" systems. Innovative client/server systems in the Finance, Human Resources, Student (Registration, Admissions, Degree Audit/Advising, Financial Aid), and Development/Alumnae areas are being implemented and integrated. The resulting system will completely replace the College's current mini-computer system. This paper provides a quick overview of the history of the project (including why we chose to integrate diverse systems versus a single vendor system), and discusses in detail the systems selected, our experience in implementing the systems, rough costs, time line, and the technical infrastructure--including the impact these changes have had and are having with the computer staff and the user community.
