Doing It Quickly: Use of a Generic Web Application Platform for Rapid Deployment of New Services

Abstract

With the Web sweeping through every aspect of campus services, how do you quickly deliver complex services without reinventing the wheel each time? This paper describes a simple application delivery platform which provides the framework for the rapid development of Web-based services at the University of California/San Diego. The first service delivered was "StudentLink," which provides students, faculty, and staff access to student-related data and services. This platform can be used for any content delivery, such as student services, financial services, travel. The Web page menus, descriptions, links, and general content can be created and maintained by the client. The application programmers deliver dynamic content from back-end sources. It also provides for secure transactions, state maintenance, and page content administration.
