The Electronic Library: New Roles for Librarians (with commentaries)

Abstract

In this article, Rapple describes the changing roles of the academic librarian with the ever-growing electronic availability of information and the promise of the Êvirtual library.Ë Some of these roles include fostering partnerships with personnel from other departments of the institution, especially computing services; becoming more involved in campus planning groups, committees, and task forces; reaching out to full-time students in dorms and to part-time students during their evening and weekend class hours; and assisting and teaching faculty as new pedagogical services are developed. Librarians will play a large part in the networked environment of the future. Commentaries by J. Euster, S. Perry, and J. Schmidt follow Rappleis article.
