Abstract
In July 1994, the Management Information department at Purdue University began an effort to identify and change programs which would fail as the twenty-first century approached. Sixty-six of the university's 132 Cobol subsystems (50%) have been converted with 6,600 hours of staff time over 30 months or 4 FTE. A computer program to scan programs for potential problems was written, methods and tools used in correcting the problems were developed, a system for tracking program modifications was established, and the effort managed with minimal effort. With a reasonable investment of time, the Cobol systems will operate into the next century. This paper describes Purdue's Year 2000 project management objectives, structure, and tools.
