Computing Services and the Bookstore--Partners? When Pigs Fly!


This paper describes the collaborative effort of Computing Services and the University Bookstore at Syracuse University to sell computers directly to students. After nearly four years as partners, the program is thriving despite changes in staffing, computer vendors, networking challenges, and various programs. This partnership has enabled Syracuse to make a commitment to students (and their parents), in writing that if they buy their computer through the Bookstore, they don't have to worry. They will be supported in their purchase. Their computers will work, their network connections will work, their software will work, and their printers will work. This paper describes the reasons for the collaboration, the basic tenets of the partnership, the problems they have encountered, and the reasons for their success.
