Abstract
Installation of a wireless laptop network has been part of a fundamental change in the way Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health has approached student computing. Since spring 1997 the network has grown from a pilot of 40 users to over 350 active users. Anticipated use for the 1999-2000 school year may be more than 500 users. This presentation will describe the school's efforts to date, including a brief history of the changes made over the past two years to the wireless network, funding of the initiative, the accommodations made to the wired network in support of wireless, a brief technical discussion of wireless networking, and perspectives on supporting the network and student laptops.
