Abstract
Carnegie Mellon and Stanford have independently participated in several Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) trials since 1996. In 1998-1999 both institutions rolled out respective production DSL services. Stanford partnered initially with Covad, and Carnegie Mellon with Bell Atlantic. Both universities retained responsibility for Internet Service Provider functions. Today each has 350-400 subscribers representing all campus sectors. This session will review Stanford and Carnegie Mellon's DSL configurations while focusing on the technical, operational, and support challenges.
