Cybersquatting, Identity Theft, and Other Network Management Challenges: Strategies for Prevention and Remediation

Abstract

Cybersquatting, parody sites, the hijacking of faculty and student e-mail accounts, privacy issues, identity theft, and trademark considerations are just some of the challenges colleges and universities must address in their network and domain name management. In addition, as more of administrative functions move online, we must be as clear as possible about our obligations to ensure that personal information does not fall into the wrong hands. Panelists will discuss institutional responsibilities in protecting personal information, policies and legal remedies available to address these problems, and the potential role that ICANN and the U.S. government can play.
