Leading by Example: The Case for IT Security in Academia

Abstract

Academia has a unique role to play in increasing global cybersecurity. Equipping graduates with the principles of secure coding is the single most critical factor in improved cybersecurity for all. Propagation of cyberethics is also essential. Secure academic networks enable the free exchange of ideas that characterizes academia. Further, strong IT security can enable academic institutions to do more and spend less, freeing scarce resource for other academic priorities. IT security is more than a necessary evil for academic institutions—it is a chance for them to lead by example and embrace the digital future.
