This ECAR research bulletin extends the discussion that was begun in the 2009 ECAR research bulletin Demystifying Cloud Computing for Higher Education by looking more deeply at the economic model underlying cloud computing and teasing out its implications for institutional IT funding practices. It draws upon recently completed ECAR research, Alternative IT Sourcing Strategies: From the Campus to the Cloud, about the benefits, complexities, and issues surrounding cloud computing and other alternative sourcing strategies.
