EDUCAUSE Comments on Perkins Loans Extension and Second Request

Abstract

EDUCAUSE joined numerous higher education associations and institutions in a letter asking the relevant leadership in the U.S. House and Senate to give further consideration to extending the Perkins Loans program for an additional year. This request follows on the heels of a September 2015 letter from the higher education community, which EDUCAUSE also joined, supporting proposed legislation for extending the program. The community sought a one-year extension of this institutionally based loan program that assists students with exceptional financial need to allow for its renewal during the pending Higher Education Act reauthorization process.

[Note: Congress ultimately passed a two-year extension of Perkins Loans in December 2015, but with provisions limiting the availability of new loans for undergraduates and blocking new loans for graduate students.]
