DNSSEC, which stands for Domain Name System Security Extensions, is a suite of specifications for ensuring the integrity and authenticity of the Domain Name System (DNS). Whenever any Internet resource is accessed by name, the name must be translated to a numeric Internet Protocol (IP) address, and DNS is the service that translates names to numbers. DNS is susceptible to a variety of attacks, however. All organizations—especially higher education institutions—should proactively work to protect users from cyber threats. Implementing DNSSEC can help protect the institution’s brand as well as its constituents. As more organizations implement DNSSEC, more can be learned and improved.
