EDUCAUSE Comments: Engaging with DHS on Immigration Executive Order

Abstract

EDUCAUSE joined 46 other higher education associations, including the major college and university presidential associations, in signing a letter to the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security about the January 2017 Trump Administration executive order on immigration. The order temporarily blocks citizens of seven countries from entering the United States, regardless of whether they have valid visas or legal permanent resident (“green card”) status. The letter highlights the vital importance of international scholars and students to U.S. higher education. It also calls for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to engage with the higher education community to resolve the order’s significant, negative impacts for those scholars and students, as well as the colleges and universities of which they are valued members.
