Building a Successful Training Partnership

Abstract

As the training needs of the Food and Nutrition Services (FANS) staff outstripped their own resources, it was a logical next step to turn to the Information Technology Division's Education Services group. However, it wasn't enough to just send people to the regularly scheduled training classes held on the main campus. The training was too far away, not always focused on what the FANS staff needed, and not always offered when they needed it. In this paper, representatives of ITD and FANS describe the successful monthly training program they adopted in response to these problems and the benefits that the training partnership has brought to both organizations. Special attention is given to "breakdowns and breakthoughs" in understanding the best models and formats for instruction, the need for flexibility, the importance of advance planning and timely communication, and modifications for the program's third year.
