Can We Talk? The Faculty and the CIO: A Conversation

Abstract

This paper summarizes a series of conversations and confrontations between an actual senior faculty member and an associate vice chancellor for information technology. The authors each present the perceptions, problems, and concerns that they bring to the frequent disconnects and miscommunications that occur between the faculty and campus information technology leadership and staff. In addition to role playing, they discuss why the miscommunications and misperceptions arise, and how through understanding of each others' viewpoints and realities CIOs and faculty can work together effectively. Examples of issues addressed are e-mail privacy, copyright, cost of service, student access, off-campus connectivity, hardware and software support, legacy systems, and the IT budget.
