The Evolving Roles of Information Professionals: Access to Information in the Digital Age

Abstract

Faculty and students are looking to libraries and information professionals to meet their information needs in the new digital environment. Making quality information instantly available to meet their needs, using simple tools that are accessible not only in the library but on the desktops of faculty and students--both in the classroom and in their homes--is a strong interest for information professionals. This paper explores some of the solutions to the demands for information from the perspectives of both campus librarian and district support. A strong understanding of the needs and an equal partnership between librarians and information technology specialists must exist to ensure that faculty and students have the tools and information needed in the electronic information age. The partnership requires information access and its required support to be a holistic approach integrating customer service, complex technology skills, and fiscal planning.
