Abstract
In 1994, the information technology organization at Indiana University/Bloomington undertook a major computing technology conversion that affected 40,000 people. This article describes the phase out of the University's VMS cluster to RISC-based UNIX systems and the factors that contributed to its success. The authors discuss strategies successfully employed at IU, including how to gain acceptance of the plan by users, which are applicable to other large-scale changes in computing technology.
