Realizing Advising Transformation: Institutional Reflective Self-Assessment

Abstract

The purpose of this reflective self-assessment is to support institutional efforts to transform advising systems to maximize student success. It is designed to facilitate institutional capacity building, planning, and change processes in order to transform advising systems so that all students have access to quality, equitable, holistic student advising. The assessment is grounded in research that identifies conditions and practices of advising redesign that are associated with equitable and improved outcomes for all students but particularly for Black, Latina/o/x, Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, and poverty-affected students.

The assessment is designed to be completed by advising leaders and staff across the institution with knowledge of and engagement in the institution’s advising redesign efforts. It can be completed by individual advising leaders and staff or by teams collectively. When the assessment is used by teams, reflecting on and discussing the variation of perceptions across staff may be particularly useful. The assessment can be completed at any point during the redesign effort and on multiple occasions to track progress and change over time.

The larger institutional context sets the stage and influences advising system redesign efforts. Thus, the assessment includes the following three dimensions:

  • Institutional Senior Leadership
  • Institutional Culture and Climate
  • Institutional Resources

The assessment then focuses in on the structures and activities most central to advising redesign efforts. This includes the following five dimensions:

  • Advising Redesign Leadership
  • Advising Vision, Values, and Principles
  • Advising Planning and Redesign Activities
  • Advising Technology Implementation
  • Advising Evaluation and Quality Improvement

After you complete the self-assessment, you will receive an email with a copy of your assessment along with recommendations and resources for increasing your institution’s capabilities in each category.
