Computing Survival Skills: Training the Workforce to Stay Abreast of Technology

Abstract

This article describes University of Virginia's Computing Survival Skills program which received the 1998 CAUSE Award for Best Practices in Professional Development. Computing Survival Skills is a training program that provides less technically skilled departmental staff with the basic computing skills and knowledge needed to help answer front-line troubleshooting questions. This article provides an overview of the program and its content, instructional materials, certifications, benefits, results, and future plans.
