Using Fast / Gigabit Ethernet to Satisfy Expanding Bandwidth Needs

Abstract

The University of South Florida, Academic Computing began the 100 Megabit University Project after seeing that the existing campus network would not be able to support new applications. The University network has been running on 10 Megabit (Ethernet) technology. To provide better service, a plan was initiated to upgrade the 4,000 faculty and student lab desktop network connections to Fast Ethernet with a Gigabit Ethernet backbone connecting 20 academic buildings. This paper describes the motivation for upgrading, overview of the new network design, backbone technology selection, desktop technology selection, desktop wiring choices, vendor selections, installation and implementation issues, and conclusions.
