Regional Cybersecurity/Cyberinfrastructure Workshop Targeting MSIs: Low-Cost/High-Impact Cyberdefense and Cyberinfrastructure Resources

Abstract

The purpose of the inaugural CyberRISK Workshop was to bring together CIOs and CISOs from regional Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) in order to introduce effective, community-developed and -coordinated cybersecurity protections and cyberinfrastructure (CI). The two-day workshop was organized around three key objectives: 1) educate and train participants in the operation of specific cyber defense tools and techniques, with a hands-on workshop to configure tools for each participating campus; 2) provide a forum for national groups such as Internet2, EDUCAUSE, and REN-ISAC to further learn about the needs of the MSI community and share services and opportunities with MSIs; and 3) provide opportunities for the participants to meet with peers on common issues. The workshop aimed to facilitate establishment of relationships among MSI campus security and CI personnel and regional and national CI practitioners. It was also conceived of and organized with the hopes of being a model for other similar workshops throughout the nation. Funding and guidance for the workshop were provided by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

This report summarizes the motivations and organization of the workshop (pages 1-2), provides a high-level description of the workshop and associated findings (pages 3-6), analyzes the survey results analysis (pages 7-8), and reports on the lessons taken from the workshop in terms of both next steps for the organizers (page 9-11) and for would-be organizers of other similar workshops nationally (page 11). Also included in this report are related documents for adaptation and reuse, including the workshop agenda and the survey instruments that were used before and immediately after the workshop. Other collateral workshop materials (planning materials and timelines, presentation and handout materials, etc.) associated with the workshop can be found athttps://sites.duke.edu/cyberrisk/.
