The Higher Education CIO: Portrait of Today, Landscape of Tomorrow—Slide Presentation

Abstract

This slide presentation illuminates findings from the EDUCAUSE Center for Applied Research (ECAR) 2011 research on the role of the higher education CIO and the state of the IT workforce. This slide deck can be adapted for presentations within your institution, since it is complete with data linked from charts to enable you to add your own institution’s data to the charts. The full study to which these slides refer investigated the higher education CIO role and how it is changing, the makeup and impacts of the CIO portfolio, the educational and professional background and skills of our current CIOs and those who aspire to fill these positions, and how we can best prepare the next generation of CIOs. The research draws from ECAR survey responses from 3,400 people from more than 1,000 institutions: 368 senior IT leaders (whom we refer to in this report as CIOs), 545 CIO “aspirants,” and 2,487 other IT staff. Twenty-four follow-up phone interviews were also conducted with CIO respondents. The research also draws on results from the 2005-2009 EDUCAUSE Core Data Service (CDS) and the 2006–2011 EDUCAUSE Current Issues Surveys.
