Empowering Students and Instructors: Reflections on the Effectiveness of iPads for Teaching and Learning

Abstract

Devices like the Apple iPad call for purposeful experimentation to see how mobile technology might be used in teaching and learning and in updating established educational models to engage today’s students. This ELI Brief describes the findings from three Indiana University (IU) faculty learning communities that spent the 2010/2011 academic year studying the effectiveness of iPads for teaching and learning. iPads were found to increase student engagement by providing innovative and creative learning environments, despite the effort required to make adjustments to the technology. In addition, successful iPad initiatives depend on effective, scalable support models, for both pedagogical and logistical support.
