Timeline for Planning a Breakthrough Model School

This 15-month timeline from the International Association for K-12 Online Learning (iNACOL), Next Generation Learning Challenges (NGLC), and the Donnell-Kay Foundation attempts to identify the key decision-making moments in the planning process for opening a blended, personalized, competency-based learning (aka “breakthrough”) model in a K-12 school. Since so many factors influence when an activity might actually need to occur in individual situations, the timeline offers a sequence for decision-making around specific objectives. From the moment planning begins to the day that school opens, the timeline traces actions required within strategic planning, model design and finances, technology, facilities, community and partner engagement, curriculum and instruction, staffing and professional development, and student enrollment and orientation.
